NLACRC Consumer & Family Stories

Frank Weisman proves that age is not a barrier when it comes to accomplishing your goals and dreams.

The Frank Weisman Story
By Charles Ornelas

Let me tell you about the incredible accomplishments of a very persevering person who has succeeded in the face of adversity surrounding the treatment of our aging population with developmental disabilities. At 61 years young, Frank has been witness to the development of the Regional Center system and services for the developmentally disabled.

Frank is all smiles as an usher for AMC.

Frank is a local figurehead in his community and is the first person to help someone in need.  He is also an accomplished Bocce Ball player with numerous mentions and awards via the Special Olympics.  Frank has worked in many environments throughout the past 3 decades, but his greatest accomplishment came at the end of the 2006 year.

Frank began working for the past few years on his dreams of accomplishing what no other his age or disability has.  As an usher for AMC 16 Theaters in Woodland Hills, Frank had the opportunity to put his plan into action.  He taught himself how to use the walkie-talkie device and maximize his time as an usher and porter to complete his work in a timely and professional manner.

Along with advocating for himself and through his hard work and dedication, Frank was granted the opportunity to accomplish his first dream of becoming a ticket taker.  This parlayed into his second dream coming true in the form of full-time work.  His third dream became a reality through his membership in the Job Club of BUILD Rehabilitation Industries.  Frank worked a second full-time position as a car porter at Galpin Ford for a week.

Enjoying his full-time job, Frank poses for a photo.

Frank was awarded the “Difference Maker of the Month” for December 2006, which provided him with an award and $50.00 bonus (split with another employee).  He is continuing to make an outstanding effort in hopes of earning $100.00 and the award of “Difference Maker of the Quarter.”  Frank hopes to continue making great strides for the aging population with developmental disabilities.

He has faced great adversity and his path was by no means without its challenges and set backs.  Still, he endured and wants to share his story with others in hopes that they will be inspired to accomplish their dreams and to never give up!

Charles Ornelas is Frank’s service coordinator. Thank you to Frank and Charles for sharing this inspiring story with us!
